Belt Progress & Advancement
Destin Academy of Mixed Martial Arts is not a black belt factory. Each and every rank rewards the student with a realistic, higher sense of confidence and accomplishment.

Just as we progress educationally through stages (elementary, middle, high school, and college) so is the progression in our program. Why should we award the same level of educational achievement to a 10 year old kid with perfect grades as we will give an above average first year college student? Can a 10 year old “black belt” realistically defend himself against an average 16 year old, 5'8" 150 pound (or more) kid? Do you as an adult have the skills to defend yourself against an unskilled and most skilled or trained opponents?

We at Destin Academy of Mixed Martial Arts understand that a 10 year old blue belt is not equal to a 25 year old blue belt. We also know that these "blue belt" students are in a different stage of physical development, so their training requirements are also different. Our belt advancement reflects this philosophy by not awarding black belts to anyone under the age of 18, and all students need to be training for a minimum of five continuous years to be a black belt candidate.

The Total Defense System offers a systematic method of student development and progress measured by colored belts. Our instructors will guide the willing student through the intense training required to achieve the rank of "black belt." As students move from one age group into another they will be re-evaluated. Our emphasis is on developing proper technique and ability. This goal should be first and foremost to all students. The ranking system should be the secondary goal.

The final decision of whether or not a student is ready to test will be determined by the instructor. Some students may complete the minimum testing requirements but still need more practice to attain their personal best (this is especially common at the higher belt levels.)
